How To Care For Your Kids Teeth (II)

Babies' teeth start to grow when they are about 4 months old, and by the time they are around 3 years old, all their baby teeth should be fully grown. Usually, when the kids reach the age of 12 years old, all their baby teeth would have been replaced by the new permanent teeth. If not, then something may be wrong, and you should get a professional advice from the dentist!

During the teething process, babies may experience some common development problems. Dr Jon Paul Seah shared 12 common problems at the Dental Talk.

1)  Supernumeraries
More than the usual number of teeth that we should have

2) Odontogenic cysts
        Cyst found in the gum.

3) Gemination
A developing tooth spilts into two separate teeth

4) Impacted teeth
A tooth fails to emerge, or emerge partially

5) Small permanent teeth

6) Missing teeth
A missing tooth among the row.

7) Peg shaped laterals
       Tiger tooth

8) Tongue tie
The base of the piece of skin, called the lingual frenulum, is unusally short               and tight, restricting the tongue's movement.

9) Low frenum
Where the skin of the upper lip connecting to the gum is low.

10) Diastema
Space or gap between two teeth

11) Dental caries
          It means tooth decay.

12) Nursing bottle caries
This also means tooth decay, and it is caused by prolong exposure of the teeth to milk after their feeding. Does your child doze off after or mid way drinking his or her milk? Mine does and she loves it. Now, this is bad and it could lead to nursing bottle caries after prolonged period. So make sure your kid drink some water to rinse away the milk "stains" from their teeth after they had their milk.

For a start, kids will need guidance and supervision from us to ensure that they brush their in the correct manner. A set of nice white pearlies not only give the kids a bright and sun shinny smile, it may also boost their confidence (just like us adults do...). And this confidence could be with them all the way to adulthood.

So, let us start this good habit and join the "NO CAVITIES CLUB"!
